We had an exciting and busy week with the Harvest Party and costume parade. Thanks to all of the families who helped with the Harvest Party and came to watch the parade, it was a great time.

Last week the students enjoyed learning about shapes and collaboratively building a zoo. After building with the animals and blocks, each small group worked together to draw a map of their part. Lastly, they worked to make a simple map key. We hung the map in the hall for other students in the school to find the animals on our map.

What other kinds of map would you like to make?
Share in the comments a map you would like to make.

This week we have been noticing shapes. So to help get our classroom festive for the the Harvest Party, the students created pumpkins out of shapes. Spookly the Square Pumpkin helped us think about how being different makes us special and gave us ideas for creating these playful pumpkins.

Are you ready for Halloween?
Share in the comments what costume you have picked out for Halloween.

Each fall our school community works together to help raise money and awareness for the needs of tigers in the wild. This week we used a site called Pebble Go (see parent page for password if you would like to explore at home) to learn more about tigers. Why? Well, we believe in helping to protect and caring for others and animals.  Using what we learned about these wild cats, the students decided to write a promise that would help teach others about the importance of tigers and their needs.

Add to the comments what you learned is important to tigers.

This week we read, Questions, Questions to help us begin to think about wonders we have.

Some of us shared ideas like:

How do the leaves change color?

Why do some sharks go after humans?

Will I ever find a four leaf clover?

Add some more wonder questions you are thinking about in the comments.

These are the amazing faces of our first grade class!
Can you think of word that tells about these faces? Add it to our comments and we can create a poem! I will start the first word and as you add to comments, I will add to the poem.

Our Faces
Smiling
Excited
Happy

Today we practiced using a software tool for creating called Pixie. We have missed our friend Sammy as she has been home sick, so we decided to create a book for her.
We hope to see you tomorrow Sammy!
A Book of Happy Thoughts for Sammy
